Abstract

Objective: Describe clinical and laboratory characteristics of hyponatremic patients treated in Endocrinology & Diabetes Department of Bach Mai Hospital. Subjects and Method: Descriptive study on 50 patients with a blood sodium concentration of less than 135 mmol/L at Endocrinology Department in Bachmai Hospital from 1/2023 to 7/2023. Results: Average age is 65.86 ± 12.71, the most common age group is over 60, male to female is 1.4:1. 42% of patients have acute hyponatremia and 58% with chronic hyponatremia. The average sodium concentration at admission is 121.38 ± 9.07; 40% of patients have blood sodium concentration < 120 mmol/L, patients with sodium concentration between 120-129 mmol/L and ≥ 130 mmol /L account for 36% and 24% respectively. The proportion of asymptomatic hyponatremia patients is 46%, mainly in the mild hyponatremia group; The most common symptom is headache with 46%, often occurring in acute, moderate to severe hyponatremia. After 24 hours of treatment, the average sodium concentration is 126.36 ± 6.78 mmol/L and 16% of patients still have blood sodium < 120 mmol/L. Conclusion: Clinical and laboratory characteristics of patients with hyponatremia are variable and nonspecific, depending on the degree and rate of hyponatremia as well as the cause of hyponatremia and comorbidities.
