CLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF ENDOGENOUS ENDOPHTHALMITIS IN CHILDREN AT NATIONAL EYE HOSPITAL

Abstract
Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics of endogenous endophthalmitis in children at National Eye Hospital. Methods: The study was conducted in children aged 0-18 years who were diagnosed and treated for endogenous endophthalmitis at National Eye Hospital from 1/1/2016 to 31/12/2020. Retrospective study described a series of diseases with a sample size of 162 patients. The medical records were collected and recorded information related to epidemiology, symptoms and signs. Results: The age group from 2-5 years old highest proportion with 42%. The majority of patients reported blurred visioin (82,2%), eye pain (81,1%) and red eyes (68%). Corneal edema is the most common physical symptom with 88,9%, followed by hypopyon (74,1%) and pupillary discharge (43,8%). Vitreous humor was only observed in 45,7% of patients. Conclusion: Blurred vision, pain and red eyes are three most common symptoms. Endophthalmitis causes severe damage to intraocular structures. Corneal edema is a common sign which results in difficult to evaluate posterior lesions.
