Abstract

Sarcopenia is a disease that affects quality of life, increases the burden of medical costs, increases disability and hospitalization rates in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Objectives: To describe the characteristics of Sarcopenia and survey some related factors in rheumatoid arthritis outpatients at Hanoi Medical University Hospital. Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 41 rheumatoid arthritis outpatients from January 2023 to July 2023. Diagnosis of Sarcopenia is based on the criteria of the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 (AWGS 2019) and rheumatoid arthritis according to EULAR 2010 criteria. Results: Sarcopenia affected 48,8% of RA patients, of which 12,2% had severe cases. The prevalence of Sarcopenia in the group of patients with moderate disease activity according to the DAS28-CRP scale was the highest at 60%. Disease activity level, nutritional status, and education level were statistically significant association to Sarcopenia with p < 0.05. There were no relationship between factors such as age, gender, BMI, accommodation, osteoporosis, DMARDs with Sarcopenia in rheumatoid arthritis. Conclusion: The prevalence of Sarcopenia among rheumatoid arthritis patients in outpatients setting at Hanoi Medical University Hospital was high, especially in patients with high disease activity, malnutrition and poor health, low education. Therefore, screening and early detection of Sarcopenia in patients with rheumatoid arthritis is really necessary, helping to quickly control and achieve comprehensive treatment results.
