SARCOPENIA AND SOME RELATED FACTORS IN PATIENTS WITH SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS
Main Article Content
Abstract
Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who have Sarcopenia, a disorder which is defined by a progressive loss of muscle mass and strength, are at risk of a wide range of detrimental health issues, including a diminished ability to do daily tasks and an elevated risk of mortality. Objectives: To describe the characteristics of Sarcopenia and discuss some related factors in SLE patients at E Hospital and Hanoi Medical University Hospital. Subjects and methods: 36 SLE patients with Sarcopenia treated at E Hospital and Hanoi Medical University Hospital from January 2023 to August 2023 underwent a descriptive cross-sectional study. The Asian Working Group on Sarcopenia's 2019 criteria are used to make the diagnosis of sarcopenia. Results: Sarcopenia affected 19.44% of SLE patients, of which 5.55% had severe cases. The subgroup with high disease activity had the largest percentage of sarcopenia (42.9%) (p = 0.026). The study's findings also revealed a statistically significant association between the prevalence of sarcopenia and some variables like body mass index, nutritional status, and level of physical activity (p< 0.05). Conclusion: SLE patients at E Hospital and Hanoi Medical University Hospital had a considerable prevalence of sarcopenia, especially those with high disease activity, thin bodies, malnutrition, and inactive lifestyles. As a result, in order to achieve comprehensive therapeutic benefits, early and regular screening for sarcopenia in SLE patients is crucial.
