Abstract

Background: Reccurent Aphthous Stomatitis (RAS) in the oral mucosa are a common oral condition. This condition often recurs, causing discomfort during eating, speaking, and affecting one's psychological well-being, leading to anxiety and stress that, in turn, directly impacts the patient's quality of life. Objective: This study aims to describe the current prevalence of Aphthous ulcers and investigate the relationship between stress factors and Aphthous stomatitis among dental students at Hanoi Medical University. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 332 dental students using questionnaires and clinical examinations. Results: The prevalence of Aphthous stomatitis among dental students was 7.8%, with the majority having a single stomatitis (84.6%) and stomatitis size ranging from 1-2mm (88.5%). There was a statistically significant difference in the stress levels between the Aphthous stomatitis group and the non-Aphthous stomatitis group (p=0.018). Conclusion: The prevalence of Aphthous stomatitis among dental students is relatively low. The study reveals a significant association between stress and Aphthous stomatitis. Therefore, counseling and psychological support programs for students are crucial and need to be promoted and implemented effectively.
