Abstract

Objective: To assess the value of the improved Japanese Severity Score in predicting the prognosis of patients with acute pancreatitis. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 61 patients with acute pancreatitis who were treated in the Gastroenterology Department and Intensive Care Unit of the Central Hospital of Thai Nguyen from October 1, 2022, to July 1, 2023. Results: The average age of the patients was 51.3±14.5 years, with a male-to-female ratio of 3.357/1. Regarding clinical symptoms, all patients experienced epigastric pain (100%), followed by nausea and vomiting (54.1%), colonic ileus (32.8%), and diarrhea (9.8%). Among the 61 patients, 29 (47.5%) had mild acute pancreatitis, 22 (36.1%) had moderate acute pancreatitis, and 10 (16.4%) had severe acute pancreatitis. In the prediction of severe acute pancreatitis, at the cutoff point of the JSS score of 2.5, the area under the ROC curve reached an excellent level (AUC = 0.983, p < 0.001, 95% CI: 0.951 - 1), with sensitivity and specificity of 90% and 98.01%, respectively. Conclusion: The improved Japanese Severity Score has prognostic value in predicting the severity of acute pancreatitis.
