Abstract

Objective: Evaluate the relationship between breastfeeding practices and the occurrence of breast abscesses at Hanoi Obstetrics and gynecology Hospital. Materials and method: This is a cross-sectional study, was performed 102  breastfeeding women diagnosed with breast abscesses who came for examination and treatment at Hanoi Obstetrics Hospital from April 2023 to September 2023. Results: Breast abscesses in breastfeeding women accounted for 3.84% of women treated for postpartum milk duct obstruction at Hanoi Obstetrics and gynecology Hospital. The average age of the study subjects was 27,8±3,6; The most common age group is 18 - 35, accounting for 88.2%. The majority of patients giving birth for the first time was 63.7%, 20.6% of patients had a history of postpartum breast abscess in previous births. A significant correlation was observed between the absence of breast cleaning before breastfeeding and the development of abscesses larger than 5 cm in size. The majority of patients demonstrated recovery following treatment, with the highest cure rate (97.6%) observed in the subgroup of subjects whose breasts milk emptied. Furthermore, proper breastfeeding practices, including receiving advice and adhering to breast cleaning before and after breastfeeding, were associated with high recovery rates of 96.8% and 96%, ,4% and 88,9% respectively. Conclusion: Breast abscess is a common problem among women aged 18-35, primarily related to breastfeeding. The practice of breastfeeding significantly influences the size of breast abscess and the rate of recovery after treatment, with a higher likelihood of recovery in the group of patients practicing proper breastfeeding techniques.
