Abstract

Objective: Assess the caregiver burden of patients with Parkinson's disease dementia using the “Modified Caregiver Strain Index” (MCSI). Subjects and methods: Comparative cross-sectional study on main caregivers of 100 patients diagnosed with Parkinson's disease according to the criteria of the UK Parkinson's Disease Brain Bank (UKPDSBB / United Kingdom Parkinson's Disease Society Brain Bank) andpatients with Parkinson’s disease dementia diagnosed according to the criteria of the American Psychiatric Association (DSM-V) at the National Geriatric Hospital from June 2020 to May 2021. Results: 50 main caregivers of Parkinson's patients without dementia and 50 main caregivers Parkinson's patients with dementia were included in our study. The mean MCSI score of the study group was 9.73 ± 7.558. There was a significant difference between the mean MCSI score of the two group, it is higher in the group of caregivers for Parkinson’s disease with dementia    (p < 0.05). In the group of caregivers for Parkinson’s disease with dementia, 32% subjects had serious level of stress, while 48% had medium level of stress, and 20% were classified as non-stress based on MSCI scrore. In the group of caregivers for Parkinson’s disease without dementia, the average PDQ-carer score was 30.42 ± 26.437, compared with 74.44 ± 33.72 in the group of caregivers for Parkinson’s disease with dementia. There was a difference between the two groups with p < 0.05. Conclusion: The caregiver burden for Parkinson's patients was increased in Parkinson’s patients with dementia.
