Abstract

Background and purpose: new methods (recombiant tissue plasminogen activators, mechanical thrombectomy) combined with medical treatments are being widely used in hyperacute ischemic stroke patients, however they cause an economic burden for patients and families. The aim of this study is to evaluate clinical outcome, hospital costs and relative factors in hyperacute ischemic stroke patients. Methods: A single-centre, cross-sestional descriptive study was conducted in 133 ischemic stroke cases in Ninh Binh general hospital from 2022 to 2023. Statistical analysis of clinical outcomes, in-hospital direct costs and relative factors were performed. Results: the study was conducted on 133 patients with 94% of cases having hemiplegia. 82/133 patients (61.8%) were undergone machenical thrombectomy. 81/133 patients (60.9%) were discharged with mRS score of 0-2. The mean hospital cost for a course of treatment per stroke patient was 24.656.876 Vietnamese Dong (VND). Treatment with mechanical thrombectomy was the most expensive (mean: 80.712.370 VND), while medical treatment was cheaper (mean: 13.763.477 VND). Factors that affect in-hospital direct costs were: patient’s age, treatment method, length of stay and complications. Conclusions: 60.9% of hyperacute ischemic stroke patients were discharged with mRS score of 0-2 after treatment. The average hospital costs per stroke patient were 24.656.876 VND.
