Abstract

Objective: To assess the current situation of distribution and structure of pharmaceutical human resources in district general hospitals in Vietnam. Subjects and methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study on 6,602 pharmacy staff at 674 district public general hospitals working as of December 31^st, 2019 in cities and provinces in Vietnam. Results: pharmacitists with a university degree or higher accounted for a low rate of 15.3%, immediate pharmacitists accounted for 75.6% and primary pharmacitists accounted for 9.1%. There was an imbalance in the structure of pharmaceutical human resources between urban and rural areas and even within a province. In most areas of the country, even in big cities directly under the central government, the ratio of pharmacitists/immediate pharmacitists, pharmacitists/doctors, pharmacitists/hospital bed was low. The distribution of pharmacitists working in the district general hospitals was also unreasonable between regions and regions, the national average was only 1.5 pharmacitists/hospital, the most was in the Mekong Delta with 2.1 pharmacitists/hospital, and the lowest rate was in the central Highlands area had only 0.8 pharmacitists/hospital. Conclusion: The proportion of pharmacitists with university degree or higher accounted for a low percentage, mainly intermediate pharmacitists. There was an imbalance in the structure of pharmaceutical human resources between urban and rural areas. The proportion of pharmacists by hospital bed, doctor and hospital was low.
