Abstract

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are at higher risk of osteoporosis than healthy people because bone loss occurs over a course of years. There are many factors involved in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Objective: Determine the rate of osteoporosis and some related factors in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients treated as outpatients at Bach Mai hospital. Research subjects and methods: Cross-sectional, prospective, descriptive study conducted on 50 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease treated as outpatients at Bach Mai hospital. Results: The rate of osteoporosis in the lumbar spine was 52%, decreased bone density in the lumbar spine was 38%. At the femoral neck, the rate of osteoporosis and reduced bone density is 34% and 52%. The overall rate of osteoporosis is 60% and decreased BMD is 32%. Several factors related to osteoporosis were identified in the study including female gender (p=0.033< 0.05), low BMI (<18.5 kg/m2) (p=0.035<0.05), inhaled corticosteroid use. (ICS) (p=0.01<0.05), COPD subtype (p=0.005<0.05). Conclusion: COPD patients have a relatively high risk of osteoporosis (60%), this condition is related to a number of factors such as female gender, low BMI, ICS use, COPD subtype and is not related to age or smoking, and disease duration.
