Abstract

Objective: Evaluate the awareness, knowledge, and attitudes regarding orthodontic treatment among first-year students (Y1) at Hanoi Medical University in 2023. Research method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 376 first-year students at Hanoi Medical University who participated in the health examination for the academic year 2023. Results: Among the 376 Y1 students, 53.6% were female. Medical students accounted for the highest proportion at 47.2%, followed by nursing students at 17.2%, and students in dentistry and preventive medicine at 10.9% and 10.3%, respectively. Results on awareness: 28.6% of Y1 students had never heard or were unsure about orthodontists. Over 80% of Y1 students had heard about crowded/misaligned teeth and could recognize someone with crowded teeth. About 32.1% of Y1 students had never seen or were unsure about someone wearing braces. Knowledge results: Only 38.2% of Y1 students had accurate knowledge that genetic factors could influence tooth arrangement on the dental arch. Only 58.1% of students had correct knowledge that habits like tongue thrusting/thumb sucking/mouth breathing could cause misalignment. Attitude results: 45.6% of Y1 students had advised someone to undergo orthodontic treatment, and 59.1% felt they needed orthodontic treatment. Additionally, 56.0% of students agreed to extract a few healthy teeth if necessary for orthodontic treatment. Conclusions: The majority of first-year students at Hanoi Medical University have a reasonably good level of awareness, knowledge, and attitude regarding orthodontic treatment. However, a significant number of Y1 students still lack accurate knowledge on orthodontic issues.
