Abstract

According to the World Health Organization, soil-transmitted helminth infections disproportionately affecting underdeveloped and developing nations. Objective: In 2022, this cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the awareness levels and preventive practices regarding soil-transmitted helminth infections among 4th and 5th grade students across 13 primary schools in Xay District, Udomxay Province, Laos. Results: Only 39.4% of students possessed information about soil-transmitted helminths, predominantly sourced from teachers and friends (37.2%). 36.1% of the students demonstrated adequate knowledge for preventing these infections, with only 27.1% exhibiting good preventive practices. Conclusion: These alarming statistics underscore the urgent necessity for targeted communication and health education initiatives geared toward elementary students in the Xay District. These programs are pivotal in augmenting students’ understanding and adoption of effective prevention strategies against soil-transmitted helminth diseases.
