Abstract

Schwannoma is a rare type of tumor that forms in the nervous system, Schwannoma is the most common type of peripheral nerve tumors in adults. Schwannoma grows from cells called Schwann cells. Schwann cells protect and support the nerve cells of the nervous system. Schwannoma tumors are often benign, which means they are not cancer. But, in rare cases, about 2,5% to 5% of them, they can become cancer. Schwannoma is the most common tumor in the posterior mediastinum, accounting for about 80%, they often cause little clinical symptoms, diagnosis is based on computed tomography or chest magnetic resonance. The treatment of most posterior mediastinum tumors is surgical removal of the tumor and the response is good in most cases. Clinical case: 43 year old male patient, went to doctor because of chest and abdominal pain and was found to have a large – sized mediastinal tumor in the right chest – abdominal area through a computed tomography scan. We removed the tumor through a posterolateral thoracotomy.
