Abstract

Preterm birth is a common problem that has a major impact on a child's survival, physical-mental development, and long-term health status. Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is an effective, low-cost, easy-to-implement intervention that offers many benefits to both mother and newborn. Objective: To characterize and outcome the care of premature infants using the Kangaroo method at the National Children's Hospital in 2023 and analyze some of the factors related to the outcomes of care for premature newborns. Subjects and methods of study: Premature infants admitted to the National Children's Hospital Neonatal Center, receiving care using the KMC method from March 2023 to August 2023. Clinical symptoms and results of hospital treatment are collected and analyzed. Results: There were 102 eligible infants included in the study. The average KMC duration of 15.62 ± 10.28 days, skin-to-skin time ≥ 20 hours/day (92.2%), 96.1% achieved good KMC care outcomes. The KMC process helps premature infants stabilize their body temperature, improve weight, length, head circumference, poor feeding, vomiting, tachypnea, tachycardia. Factors influencing KMC results include exclusive breastfeeding, skin-to-skin duration ≥ 20 hours a day, caregivers, and performance skills. Conclude: KMC is a method that brings many benefits, especially for premature newborns. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the understanding and skills of KMC implementation for both medical staffs as well as caregivers in clinical practice.
