Abstract

Objectives: Assessment of the effectiveness of pain relief, swelling, and jaw tightening using a low-power diode laser after surgery to remove the wisdom teeth of the lower jaw that grew underground at Viet Nam - Cu Ba friendship Hospital. Subjects and methods: The study included 100 patients with needs and indications for extraction of wisdom teeth of the lower jaw that had grown underground and were examined and treated at the Department of Orthodontics, Viet Nam – Cu Ba friendship Hospital from September 2022 to June 2023. Study patients were divided into 2 groups with laser and no laser during surgery. Evaluation of swelling, pain, and jaw tightening between the 2 groups. Results: The highest average pain score according to VAS was recorded after 4 hours of surgery in the irradiated and non-laser groups at 2.44 ± 1.41 and 5.62 ± 1.67. The average pain score between the group with laser irradiation was lower than that of the group without laser at the time of surgery; the difference was significant with p<0.001. On day 7, the non-laser group still had pain, while the laser group had no pain. The average number of pain relievers to be used in the group of patients without laser treatment (3.12 ± 1.58 tablets) was higher than in the group of patients with laser treatment (0.59 ± 1.85 tablets). The degree of longitudinal and transverse swelling in the surgical patients with the laser irradiation group was lower than that in the group that did not use it on days 1 and 2 after surgery (p<0.05). The degree of opening of the mouth in the group of surgical patients with laser irradiation was better than in the group without laser on day 2 and the day after surgery. Conclusion: The use of diode laser has the effect of reducing pain, reducing swelling, and reducing the degree of jaw tightening after surgery in patients with misaligned lower wisdom teeth.
