Abstract

Objective: to describe the characteristics of quality of life in patients with Parkinson at the National Geriatric Hospital. Subjects and methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study on 133 patients diagnosed with Parkinson who  who were examined and treated at the National Geriatric Hospital. Participants were diagnosed with Parkinson's according to The UK Parkinson's Disease Society Brain Bank clinical diagnostic criteria. Quality of life was assessed according to the PHQ8 scale. Results: the mean age was 67.87 ± 5.95 (years). The average quality of life score according to the PDQ – 8 scale  was  9.83 ± 4.63. Difficulty in moving has the highest score (2.14 ± 1.19), followed by difficulty in dressing (1.61 ± 0.98). The lowest quality of life scores were having problems in close relationships (0.48 ± 0.75) and not being able to communicate comfortably with people (0.77 ± 0.95). The quality of life of Parkinson's patients is statistically significantly lower in the group with motor symptoms such as reduced movement, stiffness, and the later stages of the disease are associated with reduced quality of life. Conclusion: Quality of life scores in Parkinson's patients in the study were at an average level. Quality of life is low in the group of patients with reduced mobility, stiffness, and late disease stages. There is a need for intervention to improve the quality of life in Parkinson's disease such as improving motor symptoms and rehabilitation exercises.
