Abstract

Objective: Evaluate the relationship between serum cytokine concentrations and clinical characteristics in asthma patients with frequent exacerbations. Subjects and methods: Descriptive, prospective, longitudinal study on 60 asthma patients outside of exacerbations who were determined to have frequent exacerbations according to GINA standards (2019) and 60 asthma patients with few exacerbations, treated as outpatients at the Asthma Management Department - Hai Phong International Hospital from January 2020 to May 2023. Patients underwent clinical examination, chest X-ray, lung function test, assessment of inflammatory markers and serum cytokine levels at the time of the study. Results: In the asthma group with frequent exacerbations, the average serum levels of IL-4 and IL-13 were higher than in the asthma group with few exacerbations (21.10 vs. 16.48 pg/ml and 9.93 vs. 3.95 pg/ml). The average concentration of IL-4 in serum in the frequent exacerbation group with allergic history was higher than in the group without a history of allergies (22.96 vs. 18.27 pg/ml). There was no significant difference in average serum cytokine concentrations in asthma patients with frequent exacerbations according to onset characteristics, BMI and asthma control status. Conclusion: There is an association between serum cytokine levels and allergic history in asthma patients with frequent exacerbations.
