CHARACTERISTICS OF SLEEP DISORDERS IN PATIENTS WITH PARKINSON SUMMARY

Abstract

Objective: describe the characteristics of sleep disorders in Parkinson's patients. Subjects and Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study on 133 patients diagnosed with Parkinson who  were examined and treated at the National Geriatric Hospital. Participants were diagnosed with Parkinson's according to The UK Parkinson's Disease Society Brain Bank clinical diagnostic criteria. Sleep quality was assessed using the PSQI scale. Results: the mean age was 67.8 ± 5.9 (years). The rate of sleep disorders in Parkinson's patients according to the PSQI scale is 94%. Common manifestations of sleep disorders in Parkinson's patients according to the PSQI scale were: Waking up at night or early in the morning falling asleep 3 or more times/week, accounting for 63.2%; Having to wake up to use the bathroom at night (mainly due to frequent nighttime urination) with a frequency of 3 or more times/week, accounting for 46.6%; Difficulty falling asleep 3 or more times/week, accounting for 45.9%. Conclusion: The proportion of Parkinson's patients with sleep disorders is high. Routine screening for sleep disorders should be conducted for older people with Parkinson's disease to contribute to improving the quality of life for people with Parkinson's disease
