CLINICAL AND LABORATORY CHARACTERISTICS OF PITYRIASIS VERSICOLOR IN INFANTS UNDER TWO YEAR OF AGE AT NATIONAL HOSPITAL OF DERMATOLOGY AND VENEREOLOGY

Abstract

Objectives: Describe the clinical and laboratory characteristics of pityriasis versicolor in infants under two year of age at national hospital of dermatology and venereology in 2023. Method: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in 51 children aged from 2 to 24 months who were diagnosed with pityriasis versicolor at the National Dermatology Hospital from December 2022 to July 2023. Results: The majority of children are aged under 12 months, accounting for more than 80%, the ratio of male/female was 2,4/1. The most common location was the neck (76,5%), followed by the back (41,2%), face (37,3%), and chest (27,5%). 9/51 children (17,6%) had skin scabs in the lesions. 84,3% of children had hypopigmented patchs, 11,8% had pink patchs and 3,9% had hyperpigmented patchs. The majority of children had a lesion area of ​​less than 10% (94,1%). Identification of Malassezia species by culture, the growth rate was 84,3%. Malassezia furfur is the most common pathogen (29.4%), M. globosa (15.7%), and 37.3% of cases had adulterated results. ConclusionsPityriasis versicolor in children under two years of age is not exceptional. The hypochromic patchs are the main clinical manifestation and the most affected site is the neck.
