Abstract

Background: Frailty is a global health issue due to an aging population. Frailty  has relationship with specific cardiovascular diseases, including ischemic heart disease (IHD), especially in patients treated with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Although the pathophysiologic mechanisms of co-occurrence of IHD and frailty have been clarified over the past decade, little is known about the epidemiological burden of frailty in older adults treated with PCI. Objective: To investigate the prevalence and associated factors of frailty in older patients treated with PCI. Methods: From May 2023 to August 2023 at Cardiology clinics in Thong Nhat hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, this cross-sectional study included older patients treated with PCI. Frailty was assessed using Fried frailty scale. Factors associated with frailty were assessed using logistic regression. Results: Of 343 patients aged ≥ 60 years included in this study, 88 patients (25.7%) had frailty. Factors associated with frailty were age ≥ 75 years (odds ratio [OR] 2.81, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.63–4.83, P < 0.001) and heart failure (OR 2.61, 95% CI 1.40–4.86, P = 0.003). Conclusion: In older patients treated with PCI, our study found that the prevalence of frailty was 25.7%. Age ≥ 75 years and heart failure were factors associated with frailty.
