Abstract

Objective: The research aims to determine the prevalence of anemia, iron-deficiency anemia, and explore associated factors among pregnant women in their first six months in Cai Nuoc district, Ca Mau province from 2022 to 2023. Materials and methods: A total of 350 pregnant women in their first six months of pregnancy, residing in Cai Nuoc district, Ca Mau province, were interviewed and had venous blood samples taken to measure hemoglobin and ferritin levels. The evaluation criteria for anemia and iron deficiency were based on the classification of the World Health Organization. The study was conducted from October 2022 to July 2023. Results: The prevalence of anemia among pregnant women was 30.3% (106/350), while the prevalence of iron-deficiency anemia was 22% (77/350). Factors associated with iron-deficiency anemia included educational level, family economic status, inadequate diet during pregnancy, iron supplement consumption during pregnancy, and a history of menstrual irregularities. Conclusion: The prevalence of anemia and iron-deficiency among pregnant women in Cai Nuoc district, Ca Mau province, was high, associated with educational level, family economic status, inadequate dietary intake during pregnancy, iron supplement use during pregnancy, and a history of menstrual irregularities. Therefore, there is a need to strengthen interventions and education on nutrition and health for pregnant women to reduce the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia in this community.
