Abstract

Background: Malnutrition is a common medical condition and worsens poor outcomes in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. However, the importance of malnutrition has not been aware enough among chronic obstructive pulmonary disease outpatients. Objectives: To determine the prevalence and predictive value of first hospitalization of malnourished patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Subjects and research methods: Prospective cohort study on 183 chronic obstructive pulmonary disease outpatients at Nhan Dan Gia Dinh Hospital from March 2022 to September 2022, whose nutritional status were assessed by SGA (Subjective Global Assessment) method. Results: 32.2% of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease outpatients were malnutrition, of whom 27.8% and 4.4% were classified mild to moderate and severe malnutrition respectively. Malnutrition is independently associated with all-cause hospitalization OR = 2.45; (95% CI = 1.02 - 5.89; p = 0.045).
