Abstract

Primary cardiac tumors are rare and approximately 50% of those tumors are myxomas. The size of myxoma varies from 1-15cm, weight from 15-180g, the myxoma is called large when it is >5cm in diameter. Although right atrial myxomas are uncommon and benign, they have high level of potential to cause severe complications. Therefore, after diagnosis, surgical resection should be performed as soon as possible. Surgery is a radical treatment and the technique for tumor removal is not complex. In addition, recurrence rate is very low. In this case report, we have successfully performed a case of a giant myxoma in right atrium. The tumor was detected quite late, after had caused associated complications. Definitive diagnosis was made out trouble-free since the tumor size was enormous and its pedicle could be clearly observed. Open-heart surgery was performed to excise tumor, reconstruct atrial septum, and place an artificial valve ring. The postoperative courses were favorable.
