Abstract

Burn-out syndrome that appeared in physicians was first described in 1974 by American psychologist Herbert Freudenberger (1).  This is a very specific work-related syndrome for people working in the medical field, especially doctors - those directly involved in medical examination and treatment activities at hospitals and orther health facilities.  Additionally, one of the worrying things is that burn out syndrome is almost a specific syndrome reserved for medical staff, especially in the field of obstetrics and gynecology.  The American Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists found that 4 - 70% of medical staff working in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology had Burn-out syndrome, mainly due to the pressure of taking care for two patients at the same time, as well as  legal rules and the hospitals also force them to comply in areas of operation with many risks of complications like Obstetrics and Gynecology.  Obstetrics and gynecology system at Ho Chi Minh City Hopitals is undergoing huge changes to adapt to new requirements, so there are many challenges and pressures for medical staff.  Therefore, we conducted research to determine the rate of  burnout and related factors in female nurses and midwives specializing in obstetrics and gynecology in Ho Chi Minh City.  By cross-sectional research design at obstetric departments of 9 hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City from February 1, 2023 - March 31, 2023 with  800 female nurses and midwives aged 22 - 55 years old.  Research uses the MBI-HSS toolkit to determine exhaustion.  The results recorded that the rate of burnout in the research was 31.4%, of which a  high level of emotional exhaustion was 14%, a high level of loss of self-control was 9.2%, and a decrease in personal achievement in  the high is 21.8%.  Thereby, the rate of burnout among female nurses and midwives working in obstetrics departments in Ho Chi Minh City is 31.4%.
