CHARACTERISTICS AND TREATMENT OUTCOMES OF GASTRIC CANCER IN YOUNG PATIENT

Abstract
Background: Gastric carcinoma is a common disease that usually affects older patients, rarely younger patients. However, the incidence is increasing nowaday. This study examined the clinicopathological features of young patients with gastric carcinoma. Patients and methods: We retrospectively reviewed the hospital records of 50 young patients with gastric carcinoma during the period Jan-2016 to Dec-2021 at the University Medical Center in Ho Chi Minh city. Data collected included: age, sex, location of the tumor, Borrmann classification, TNM stage. Results: The prevalence of young patient with gastric cancer was 18.5%. The mean age was 34.5 ± 4.5 and women was 58%. T4a and T4b stage accounted for 50% and 24%, respectively. The rate of lymph node metastasis was 78%. Radical gastrectomy and lymphadênctomy was performed in 74% of cases. The 1-, 3-, 5- year overall survival rate were 94.5%, 74.3%, and 62.5%, respectively. Significant difference were obsserved between the T stage and differentiated histology, as well as between lymph node metastasis and differentiated histology. Conclusion: The incidence of gastric carcinoma in young patients is increasing, and it is often diagnosed at a late stage.
