Abstract

Background: Cefpodoxime proxetil (CP) is an antibiotic belonging to the third-generation cephalosporin group used to treat upper respiratory infections. This study was conducted to prepare fast disintegrating tablets containing CP suitable for use in children. Methods: In this study, orodispersible tablets were formulated using a dry granulation technique with roll compaction. The tablets were evaluated for various parameters, including bulk density, Carr's index, Hausner's ratio, a, and 1/b. Dissolution, disintegration, wetting time, and water uptake were assessed for the tablets. The study also involved the quantification of cefpodoxime using UV spectroscopy according to established standards. Results: Tablets contain 52% cefpodoxime proxetil; 36,5% lactose monohydrate; 6% croscarmellose sodium; 0,75% sodium lauryl sulfate; 0,5% acesulfame K; 1% isomalt; 1% talc, and 1% magnesium stearate help create tablets with a disintegration time of 26,5 seconds. Other criteria meet regulations for fast disintegrating tablets. Analyzes show that the pellets can absorb water, forming many large pore systems and quickly breaking physical and mechanical bonds, leading to pellet disintegration. Conclusion: Using the roll - dry granulation method, the study has proposed a suitable formula to prepare fast disintegrating containing 100 mg of cefpodoxime for children.
