ACTUAL SITUATION OF FRACTURES CAUSED BY FALLS IN THE ELDERLY TREATED AT THAI BINH GENERAL HOSPITAL

Abstract
Objective: To assess the actual situation of fractures caused by falls in the elderly treated at Thai Binh general hospital. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conduct among 80 elderly patients with fall-induced fractures treated at Thai Binh General Hospital between May 2016 and March 2017. Results: 80 patients including 25 males ( 31.2%), 55 females (68.7%), average age was 74 (from 60-90 years old); the majority of residences were in rural areas (85.0%); chronic cardiovascular diseases accounted for the highest (45%); having history of falls (17.5%); majority of patients did not use fall prevention tools (96.25%); fall locations: indoors (56.25%), bathroom (18.7%), street (17.5%); slippery floor (46.2%), followed by slippery footwear (22.5%), poor lighting (3.7%); first aid: temporary immobilization, taking analgesics before going to the hospital (58.7%); hospital stay from 7-10 days accounted for the most (56.2%); surgical treatment (85.0%); full recovery at hospital discharge accounted for (8.7%), partial support required (55.0%), bedridden (36.2%). Conclusion: Elderly people in rural areas have a high percentage of fractures. Thus, it is necessary for a community-based fall prevention program for the elderly to reduce the incidence of fall-induced fractures..
