Abstract

Objective: to assess the knowledge and practice of peripheral intravenous catheter insertion and care among clinical nurses at Bai Chay Hospital, Quang Ninh province in 2023. Methodology: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted through structured interviews and observations by checklist of 150 clinical nurses performing peripheral intravenous catheter insertion and care in the clinical departments of Bai Chay Hospital, Quang Ninh. The study was conducted from June to October 2023. Results: 30% of the nurses achieved satisfactory general knowledge regarding the insertion and care of peripheral intravenous catheters. The percentage of correct answers to questions related to knowledge of peripheral intravenous catheter insertion and care ranged from 17.3% to 98.0% and about infection prevention and control varied from 23.3% to 84.0%. The proportion of nurses answered correctly to questions related to complications associated to intravenous infusion ranged from 40.0% to 94.7%. The percentage of nurses who practiced the procedural technique of peripheral intravenous catheter insertion at proper level was 80.7%. No cases achieved acceptable record-keeping for monitoring during the peripheral intravenous catheter retention process. Conclusions: The proportion of nurses practicing at a competent level is relatively high (80.7%), but only a small number of them attained satisfactory general knowledge of peripheral intravenous catheter insertion and care. Therefore, it is needed to enhance training and improve knowledge for nurses regarding the insertion and care of peripheral intravenous catheters. Standardization and strict monitoring of record-keeping practices after insertion, during the retention and after withdrawal of peripheral intravenous catheters by nurses are essential.
