MEDICAL COSTS IN TREATING HEALTH INSURANCE INPATENTS WITH PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS: A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY AT VINH LONG LUNG HOSPITAL IN 2023

Abstract
Backgrounds: The total number of tuberculosis cases worldwide is increasing, while tuberculosis remains one of the deadliest diseases. Treating tuberculosis incurs significant costs, resulting in an economic burden not only on patients but also on society as a whole. Objectives: Identifying the direct medical costs of pulmonary tuberculosis disease and factors related to direct medical costs of pulmonary tuberculosis disease in patients with health insurance at Vinh Long Lung Hospital in 2023. Materials and methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 258 medical records and cost sheets of pulmonary tuberculosis disease in-patients with health insurance at Vinh Long Lung Hospital from 04/2023 to 03/2024. Results: total direct medical costs of pulmonary tuberculosis disease in-patients was 1.546.941.435 VNĐ, of which health insurance covered 85,3%, and patients jointly paid 14,7%. The average direct medical costs of pulmonary tuberculosis disease in-patients per treatment was 5.995.897 VND, in which drug expenses accounted for the highest proportion of 47,5%. Length of hospital stays, comorbidity disease, and quantity of comorbidity disease related to direct medical costs of pulmonary tuberculosis disease in-patients (p<0,05). Conclusions: The research contributes to the reference documentation on the overall treatment costs of pulmonary tuberculosis, assisting experts in formulating appropriate policies and decisions in line with practical situations. Additionally, it encourages people to participate in health insurance programs to alleviate the economic burden of disease treatment.
