Abstract

Objective: Evaluate the effects of treating and preventing chronic headaches using repeated transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). Subjects and methods: 40 patients diagnosed with chronic headache according to ICHD-3 criteria, received repeated transcranial magnetic stimulation at the left M1 motor cortex (80% MT, frequency 20 Hz, total 3000 pulses in 30 cycles with each cycle duration of 5 seconds, containing 100 pulses). Results: After repeated transcranial magnetic stimulation treatment for 40 patients, followed up 1, 2, and 3 months. After 3 months, 38 (87.5%) patients had > 50% reduction in headache days, and 29 (72.5 %) patients had > 50% reduction in pain severity according to NRS. Conclusions: In chronic headache, monthly 20 Hz rTMS for 3 months over the left primary motor cortex effectively reduced headache days and severity compared with rTMS alone.
