Abstract

Objective: To assess the prevalence of malnutrition among older patients having hypertention in National Geriatric Hospital. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted in hypertensive older patients in 2023. Nutritional stutus was assessed by using MNA – SF (Mini Nutritional Assessment – short form). Results: A total of 374 patients was recruited in the study. The mean age of study population was 76.1±7.4 years. Patients with the number of years of hypertension ≤5 years have a higher malnutrition status than those with hypertension >5 years (OR 2.57; 95%CI: 1.24-5.32) and other diseases. Patients who adhere to hypertension treatment are more malnourished than patients who do not adhere to treatment (OR 2.72; 95% CI: 1.12-6.67). Patients who had to be hospitalized at least once in the past 12 months had a higher risk of malnutrition than those who did not have to be hospitalized (OR 2.67; 95% CI: 1.29-5.53). Patients with altered oral health were 7.05 times more malnourished than those with normal oral health, p<0.05. Impaired daily functioning (dependent patients group) had a malnutrition rate 14.19 times higher than the independent patients group, p<0.05. Conclusion: Some factors related to increased risk of malnutrition in elderly hypertensive patients include duration of hypertension, treatment compliance, history of hospitalization, dyslipidemia, and reduced physical function.
