Abstract
Objective: Evaluate the results of biocement injection with balloon to treat patients with collapsed low lumbar vertebrae and severe osteoporosis at Viet Duc University Hospital. Methods: The study included 45 patients with collapsed lumbar vertebrae and osteoporosis who were injected with biocement with balloons at Viet Duc University Hospital from July 2022 - June 2023. Results: The average surgery time was 51.3 ± 12.5 minutes (35 - 85 minutes). The average volume of cement injected is 5.7 ± 1.5ml (2 - 9ml). The average height of the anterior wall, middle wall, and collapsed posterior wall improved with statistical significance when comparing before and after cement injection (p < 0.01). The good height restoration rate is 31/48 vertebrae, the very good rate is 7/48 vertebrae. The average measurement of vertebral body collapse angle and Cobb angle improved statistically significantly when compared before and after cement injection (p < 0.01). The pain relief effect through the VAS scale was significantly improved with p < 0.01. Average VAS before pumping, 24 hours after pumping and 6 months after pumping were 7.1, 3.1, 1.4, respectively. Conclusion: Surgery using bio-cement pump with balloon to treat patients with collapsed low lumbar vertebrae and severe osteoporosis brings effective improvements in height, curvature, spinal projection, and quality of life for patient.
