Abstract

Background: The attention and understanding about aspiration and correct actions of caregivers in preventing aspiration when supporting oral eating to help improve patient safety, quality of life and reduce unwanted incidents during patient care. Objective: Determine the understanding, attention, and actions of patients' family members to prevent aspiration during oral eating in patients at risk of aspiration; factors related to the caregiving actions when supporting the patient’s oral eating. Subjects and Methods: Cross-sectional study from January 2023 to March 2023, with participants being family members who directly take care of the patient (caregivers), and this patient belongs to the vulnerable group. Risk factors for aspiration when eating by mouth are studied in eight inpatient departments, University Medical Center, HCM City. Results: the average score of understanding is 4.17 (SD = 2.05), with the rate of insufficient understanding being 69.0% (290/420), attention has an average score of 3.57 (SD = 0.40), and a good attention rate of 65.5% (275/420). Finally, the average score on correct actions when supporting the patient’s oral eating was 7.03 (DLC = 1.37), with a good rate of 74.8% (314/420). Conclusion: Although more than half of the participants pay attention to aspiration, more than 60% of them do not have enough understanding of aspiration when oral eating, and 25.2% do not have enough correct actions when supporting the patient’s oral eating. There should be health education and communication materials and health education plans for patients and caregivers on preventing aspiration when eating orally.
