DEPRESSION AMONG THIRD-YEAR MEDICAL STUDENTS AT TRA VINH UNIVERSITY IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2023 – 2024 AND SOME RELATED FACTORS

Abstract

prevalence of depression of third-year medical students at Tra Vinh University in the academic year 2023-2024 and some related factors. Method:  A cross-sectional study was carried out on 222 third-year medical students of Tra Vinh University using the DASS - 21 scale to assess depression. Other information was collected by self-reported questionnaires. Results: the prevalence of depression among medical students was 44,1%. In which, mild depression was 18%, moderate depression accounted for 17,1%, severe depression was 3,6% and extreme severe was 5,4%. Factors associated with the risk of having depression among students were eating disorders,physical activity, financial difficulties,  academic performance, marks not as expected, no siblings; Family members have had anxiety disorders or depression; not joining clubs/groups,difficult to find new friends, difficulty adapting to new living environments. Conclusion: Third-year medical students are often under pressure from academic achievement so there is a need for sharing from the family and the school and improving their understanding of mental health. To plan for effective learning, to build a healthy lifestyle.
