Abstract

Objectives: Describe the incidence of new-onset constipation and analyze some factors associated with constipation in stroke patients at National Rehabilitation Hospital. Subjects and methods: This is a prospective cross-sectional descriptive study of 49 patients at the time of admission to the National Rehabilitation Hospital between May 2023 and November 2023. Result: In this study, the prevalence of new-onset constipation following stroke was 44,9%, including 47.4% in patients with cerebral hemorrhage and 43.3% in patients with cerebral infarction; The incidence of constipation in the acute, subacute, and chronic stages of stroke was 45.5%, 42.9%, and 50.0%, respectively. Factors associated with the incidence of new-onset constipation in stroke patients are severity of stroke (NIHSS ≥ 4 ), dependence on daily living (mRS ≥ 3), and the need to defecate using a bedpan (defecation in bed) (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The new-onset constipation in patients with cerebral stroke is prevalent and requires attention upon admission. Early movement and an enabling environment for defecation are interventions that may reduce the incidence of constipation in stroke patients and improve rehabilitation outcomes.
