Abstract

Objectives: Describe the  clinical, subclinical characteristics and evaluate the surgical outcomes of laparoscopic approach and open surgery for hiatal hernia compare in pediatric patients. Methods: This was a retrospective study of 28 patients younger than 16 years who underwent an operation for hiatal hernia in Children’s Hospital No.1 and Children’s Hospital No.2 between January 2012 and June 2022. Results: Among 28 patients, there were 16 sliding types (type I). The most common symptoms were vomiting and recurrent respiratory tract infections. Laparoscopic surgery was conducted in 11 patients and open surgery in 17 patients. The median operating time was shorter in the open surgery group (102 minutes, range: 60 – 170 minutes) versus the laparoscopic group (191,4 minutes, range: 150 – 230 minutes). Postoperative complications were noted in 6 patients, the most common complication was gastroesophageal reflux (50%). Postoperative complications are not related to open surgery or laparoscopic. Conclusion: Laparoscopic is a safe and effective approach with no difference in postoperative complication rates compared to open surgery in surgical treatment for hiatal hernia in children.
