Abstract

Objective: to evaluate mobility and some related factors in older patients with dementia. Subjects and methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study on 71 patients ≥ 60 years old diagnosed with dementia examined and treated at the National Geriatric Hospital. Mobility was assessed mobility using the Timed Up and Go test. Results: The proportion of patients with reduced mobility was 80.3%. There was a statistically significant relationship between the risk of falls, dependence on daily functional activities (Barthel Index), and impaired mobility (p<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between reduced mobility and age, gender, co-morbidities (hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, stroke, heart failure), and type and severity of dementia and other geriatric syndromes such as polypharmacy, malnutrition, sleep disorders, depression, urinary incontinence, IADL. Conclusion: The rate of mobility impairment was quite high and was associated with a high risk of falls and dependence on daily functional activities (Barthel Index).
