RESEARCH ON DIRECT MEDICAL COSTS OF ASTHMA INPATIENTS AT NGA BAY CITY GENERAL HOSPITAL IN HAU GIANG PROVINCE IN 2023

Abstract

Background: asthma is an economic burden for many countries around the world and also in Vietnam. Studying about the direct medical costs of asthma is a matter of concern. Objectives: identifying the direct medical costs and factors related to direct medical costs of asthma inpatients in Nga Bay city general hospital in Hau Giang province in 2023. Materials and methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 122 medical records, invoices, payment data of  inpatients diagnosed with asthma and participating in health insurance in Nga Bay City General Hospital, Hau Giang province from January 1, 2023 until May 31, 2023. Data were collected and analyzed by using Excel 2016 and SPSS 20.0 software. Results: total direct medical cost of asthma inpatients was 280.965.238 VND, the average direct medical cost per patient was 2.302.994 VND. Bed costs accounted for the majority (48.3%), followed by drugs costs (28.6%). Direct medical costs were paid by health insurance accounted for 91.6%. Factors such as gender, age group, number of treatment days and treatment outcomes were related to total direct medical costs (p<0.05). Conclusion: in inpatient treatment, bed costs and drugs costs play vital roles. Direct medical costs of inpatients with asthma are mostly paid by health insurance.
