Abstract

Objective: The study has objectives: To determine the success rate and some related factors of blind pleural biopsy in the diagnosis of pleural histopathology in patients with exudative pleural effusion at the Department of Internal Medicine and Respiratory Medicine, Can Tho Central General Hospital. Methods: A cross-sectional retrospective study design on 97 patients admitted to the Department of Internal Medicine and Respiratory Medicine, Can Tho Central General Hospital with a diagnosis of exudative pleural effusion from January 2023 to January 2024. Result: The success rate was very high in the first biopsy (95.9%), patients aged ≥50 years old, with a large amount of pleural effusion, lemon yellow pleural effusion, the percentage of lymphocytes in the pleural effusion of about 71.38% and the presence of foreign cells in the pleural effusion were more likely to have pleural effusion due to cancer than the other group. Patients with protein levels ≥50 g/l were more likely to have tuberculous pleural effusion than the other groups. There was a relationship between the proportion of lymphocytes in the pleural fluid and the negative or positive results of the pleural fluid PCR test.
