Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the outcomes of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy in patients with carbon monoxide poisoning. Subjects and methods: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted on 35 patients diagnosed with CO poisoning who received HBO treatment at the Poison Control Center, Bach Mai Hospital, from June 2023 to June 2025. Results: The frequency of respiratory and neurological clinical symptoms significantly decreased after HBO therapy. There was a marked improvement in psychological test scores before and after HBO. Levels of HbCO, MetHb, CK, Troponin T, GOT, and GPT gradually declined to within the safe range after treatment, with statistical significance (p < 0.05). Respiratory symptoms completely resolved, and the incidence of headache decreased from 45.7% to 5.7%, the proportion of patients with depression decreased from 22.9% to 0.0%, and those with memory impairment decreased from 51.4% to 5.7%. Pulmonary lesions on chest radiographs decreased to 8.6%, while the number of cases with cerebral parenchymal injury declined from 12 to 5. The mean GOS score at 12 months was 4.9 ± 3.6, significantly higher than at admission (p < 0.05). Conclusion: HBO is an effective treatment for CO poisoning at all stages; in particular, HBO plays an important role in preventing delayed neurological complications, especially memory impairment, cognitive dysfunction, and anxiety symptoms in patients with CO poisoning.
