Abstract

Evaluation of medicine list used at health facilities is essential to point out inadequacies in medicine selection and use, thereby taking timely solutions. This is the first study conducted at Thai Binh Provincial General Hospital, aiming to evaluate medicine list. All drug items used from June 2018 to June 2019 (the hospital's bidding period) were included in the analysis according to some indicators and ABC/VEN analysis method. Out of 391 drug items used (equivalent to 83.34 billion VND), group of anti-parasitic drugs and anti-infective drugs accounted for the highest proportion (14.60% of items and 21.60% of drug cost). Imported drugs accounted for a high proportion (56.78% of items and 72.87% of drug cost). Original brand-name drugs accounted for 13.08% of items and 19.30% of drug cost. The hospital has prioritized procurement of vital (V) and essential (E) drugs. The group of drugs with high cost but not essential (AN) included 3 items corresponding to about 1.53 billiion VND. The hospital needs to review imported drugs and original brand-name drugs used, consider replacing with generic and domestically produced drugs on the principle of ensuring effectiveness, safety and economic, and consider removing AN drugs from the hospital drug list.
