Abstract

Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the change in health-related quality of life of patients who underwent type 1 tympanoplasty using the Vietnamese version of the COMQ-12 questionnaire. Subjects and method: describe 72 patients with chronic otitis media who underwent type 1 tympanoplasty at the Department of Neurotology, National Otolaryngology Hospital. Patients were interviewed to fill out the Vietnamese version of the COMQ-12 questionnaire at two times before surgery and 3 months after surgery. Results: The average age of study participants was 42 years old, of which 62.5% of patients were female, COM was unilateral in 59 patients (81.9%) and bilateral in 13 patients (18, 1%). 9 patients (12.5%) already had surgery at the time of questionnaire administration. The Vietnamese version of the COMQ-12 showed good internal consistency (Cronbach Alpha : 0.937), the correlation index of each question with the general structure of the question set is greater than 0.3. The scores of questions 1,2,3,4,5,9,12 are in the range of 1-2, the remaining questions have scores <1 for preoperative patients. For patients 3 months after surgery, all questions have scores <0.5. The patient's total score before surgery was higher than the total score after surgery with p < 0.05. The patient's scores of questions related to symptoms of otitis media were higher before than 3 months after surgery and the difference was statistically significant with p < 0.05. Conclusion: The Vietnamese version of the COMQ-12 questionnaire helps assess the quality of life of patients with chronic otitis media. The quality of life of patients with chronic otitis media is improved well after simple atrial repair surgery, as shown by the total score as well as the score of each question in the COMQ-12 questionnaire after surgery when compared with before. surgery.
