Abstract

Objective: The value of MRI in the assessment of pre – operative staging of rectal cancer, compare with histopathology of the resected specimen. Method: A retrospective, axial-descriptive study in patients who had been diagnosed with rectal cancer, then do MRI to assessment of preoperative staging, and treated with surgery, at Thanh Hoa Oncology Hospital from January 2022 to December 2023. Results: Our study included 39 patients. Mean age was 63.36±11.2 (37–80), with M/F=19/20. Location of the lessions: low rectal (35.9%), median rectal (41%), high rectal (23.1%). Preoperative MRI  has an accuracy of 84.6% in diagnosing T stage and 87.2% in diagnosing N stage. Sensitivity, specificity, PPV and NPV of MRI for assessment of extramural tumour spread were 92.9%, 81.8%, 92.9%, and 81.8%, respectively. Sensitivity, specificity, PPV and NPV of MRI for detection of local metastastic adenopathy were 100%, 75%, 90%, and 100%,respectively. Conclusion: pre - operative MRI is an valuable diagnostic tool for assessment of local staging of rectal cancer, contributes to the treatment planning for patients.
