THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOME OPPRTUNISTIC INFECTIONS AND CD4 CELL COUNTS WITH MUCOSAL LESIONS IN HIV/AIDS PATIENS

Abstract
Objective: Describe the relationship between some opportunistic infections and CD4 cell counts with oral mucosal lesions in HIV/AIDS patients. Subjects and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 261 patients being treated at the Central Tropical Diseases Hospital in 2022 - 2023. Results: Hyperpigmentation and Herpes simplex appeared in all 4 Clinical stages of HIV, in which hyperpigmentation was the most common in clinical stage 1 (50%), while Herpes simplex was the greatest number in clinical stage 2 (50%). Candida fungus is associated with four opportunistic infections including pneumonia, meningitis, PCP and sepsis. There were 194/261 patients (accounting for 74.3%) with CD4 count ≥ 200 cells/mm3 and hairy leukoplakia appeared most in the groud of CD4 count < 200 cells/mm3. Conclusion: In patients with HIV/AIDS, hyperpigmentation and Herpes simplex occur in all clinical stages of HIV. Oral candidiasis is often accompanied by opportunistic infections such as pneumonia, meningitis, PCP and sepsis. In addition, the number of oral mucosal lesions increases when CD4 cells are < 200 cells/mm3.
