Abstract

In recent years, the Mekong Delta has been facing challenges from climate change, water shortages, saltwater intrusion as well as other increasingly serious extreme weather phenomena. These are factors considered to be at risk of causing or worsening skin diseases. Objective: Assess the current status of common skin diseases in the community, epidemiological characteristics and some factors related to skin diseases in Kien Giang province. Research subjects and methods: cross-sectional description on 122 patients with skin diseases in Vinh Phu commune, Giang Thanh district, Kien Giang province. Results: (1) At least 16 types of skin diseases were found. Among them, the three skin diseases with the highest rate are atopic dermatitis (24.43%), contact dermatitis (16.79%), and skin fungus (12.21%). The number of common skin diseases is 01 disease/person (92.6%), the average duration of the disease is 2.37 ± 6 years. Up to 86.1% of patients with skin diseases do not receive treatment or self-treat, and the proportion of patients with other diseases concurrently is 29.5%. (2) Factors that have a linear correlation and are related to at least one skin disease in the community include sun exposure time and protective activities; exposure to harmful factors; use bath products; type of water used in daily life; eating habits, occupation and demographic factors. Conclusion: The research results are the basis for making recommendations and conducting further research on skin diseases in rural areas in Kien Giang province.
