Abstract

Purpose: Periodontitis is a common oral disease and the leading cause of tooth loss. The aim of the study is to evaluate the clinical effects of tablets containing the probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri (probiotics) in supporting non-surgical treatment (NST) of periodontitis. Materials and methods: 32 patients were randomly divided into 2 groups: test group (probiotics) and control group (placebo). Lozenges are used twice a day for 4 weeks after root planing. A clinical evaluation was performed at baseline (T0), 2 weeks (T1), 1 month (T2), and 3 months (T3) after the treatment. Result: The results showed that at 3 months post-treatment, the test group had periodontal pocket depth in moderate pockets (4-6 mm) and the need for surgery treatments was significantly lower than the control group (p < 0,05). Conclusion: Our results provided evidences of adjunctive effect of probiotics in non-surgical treatment for periodontitis. Using probiotics improves periodontal pocket depth in moderate pockets (4-6 mm) and reduces the need for surgery treatments. As probiotics can be a potential treatment in combination with other periodontal therapies, more studies are needed to promote its clinical application.
