Abstract

Objective: To describe the clinical and paraclinical characteristics of patients with vertebral compression fractures due to osteoporosis treated with balloonless biologic cement injection and to evaluate the treatment outcomes of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures using balloonless biologic cement injection at Nghe An Trauma and Orthopedic Hospital. Methods: A retrospective study of 29 patients who underwent percutaneous vertebroplasty at Nghe An Trauma and Orthopedic Hospital from January 2023 to February 2024. Results: Most patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures were elderly, with those over 70 years old accounting for 55.1%, and the average age being 75.8 ± 8.2. The majority were female, making up 89.6%, compared to 10.4% male, resulting in a female/male ratio of 8.6. Most patients had a T-score < -2.5 (96.6%), with no patients having a T-score < -1 and only one case with a T-score between -2.5 and -1. After treatment with balloonless biologic cement injection, VAS scores decreased significantly before and after the procedure. Follow-up for 6 months or longer showed very good results in 58.6%, good results in 37.9%, and average results in 3.5%. 97.4% of patients were very satisfied or satisfied with the treatment outcome. Conclusion: Balloonless biologic cement injection for vertebroplasty is a safe treatment method with a low complication rate and very high effectiveness, with 100% of patients experiencing pain relief immediately after the procedure.
