Abstract

Objective: Evaluation of postoperative care outcomes in patients undergoing hepatectomy for Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC). Subjects and methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study involved 120 patients who underwent hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma at the Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic the Surgery, K Hospital, from February to August 2024. Results: Vital signs were relatively stable. The rates of fever on postoperative days (POD) 1, 3, and 5 were 12.5%, 5%, and 2.5%, respectively. The incidence of wound fluid accumulation on POD 1, 3, and 5 were 30.8%, 25.0%, and 15.8%, respectively. Severe pain was reported by 12.5% of patients on the first postoperative day, decreasing to mild pain in the majority (90%) by POD 5. Wound dressing changes were performed ≥2 times/day for 75.8% of patients on POD 1, with the majority (90.0%) receiving daily changes by POD 5. Most patients received intravenous nutrition on POD 1 (93.3%), transitioning to liquid food by POD 5 (90.0%). Early mobilization was guided for 95.0% of patients on the first postoperative day. Conclusion: The study highlights the importance of postoperative care in patients undergoing hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma, emphasizing the detection of complications, pain management, and rapid recovery, contributing to the overall success of the surgery.
