Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of an enhanced health education intervention on knowledge and practice of oral health care and periodontal disease in diabetic patients at Kien Giang Provincial General Hospital. Methods: A randomized controlled trial from January 2022 to March 2022, with the intervention group being diabetic patients receiving enhanced oral health education and the control group receiving routine health education. Results: After intervention, knowledge scores in the intervention group increased from 3 points to 6 points (p < 0.001) and in the control group increased from 3 points to 5 points (p < 0.001). The knowledge score in the intervention group was statistically significantly higher than the control group at post-intervention time with p=0.002. Regarding practice, the intervention group improved practice scores from a median of 4 to 7 points (p<0.001). The control group improved its practice score from a median of 3.5 to 6 points (p<0.001). The intervention group's improvement in practice scores was statistically significantly higher than the control group with p<0.001. Conclusion: Enhanced health education intervention effectively improves the knowledge and practice of diabetic patients about periodontal disease and oral care compared to routine hospital health education.
